Know Your Evacuation Zones
- Register at your county emergency management website for zone maps
- Know your zone letter/number and what triggers an order for that zone
- Identify all evacuation routes — primary, secondary, and on foot
- Download offline maps before an emergency strikes
The 15-Minute Rule
- Assume you have 15 minutes from order to departure
- Pre-pack your go-bag and review it every 6 months
- Assign each household member a specific task
- Practice a timed evacuation drill at least once a year
Pet Evacuation
- Confirm your destination accepts pets before you go
- Have a carrier, leash, and ID tag ready at all times
- Carry a 3-day supply of food and any medications
- Photo ID of you with your pet in case of separation
Destinations
- Know the nearest official shelter (check red cross site)
- Have a friend or family destination at least 50 miles out
- Pre-book a pet-friendly hotel if needed (refundable)
- Save shelter locations offline on your phone
Before You Leave
- Shut off gas at the meter if instructed
- Unplug major appliances to prevent surge damage
- Lock all doors and windows
- Leave a note on the door with where you are going
- Take all medications and medical equipment
- Take original IDs, passports, and financial documents
