Transparent Math: Why We Show Every Calculation
Most preparedness tools give you a score with no explanation. Prevna shows every formula, every weight, and every input so you can verify the math yourself.

The Black Box Problem
Most preparedness apps and websites give you a score or a rating with no explanation. "Your preparedness level: Medium." What does that mean? How was it calculated? What specifically should you do to improve it?
Nobody knows. It is a black box.
At Prevna, we believe that if you cannot see the math, you cannot trust the result. That is why every calculation in Prevna is transparent, verifiable, and explained.
How the Readiness Score Works
Your Readiness Score is a number from 0 to 100. Here is exactly how it is calculated:
`
Readiness Score = Base Score (5)
+ Tasks Score (weight: 25%)
+ Scenarios Score (weight: 20%)
+ Documents Score (weight: 10%)
+ Financial Score (weight: 20%)
+ Pantry Score (weight: 25%)
`
Each sub-score is itself a 0-100 number calculated from specific, measurable inputs.
Tasks Score (25% weight)
`
Tasks Score = (Completed Checklist Items / Total Checklist Items) x 100
`
If you have 40 checklist items across all your plans and have completed 28, your Tasks Score is 70.
Scenarios Score (20% weight)
`
Scenarios Score = (Prepared Scenarios / Selected Scenarios) x 100
`
A scenario counts as "prepared" when you have completed at least 80% of its checklist items.
Documents Score (10% weight)
`
Documents Score = (Completed Document Checklist / Total Required Documents) x 100
`
Required documents include: emergency contacts, insurance info, medical records, IDs, and property documents.
Financial Score (20% weight)
`
Financial Score = Savings Factor (40%)
+ Debt Factor (30%)
+ Insurance Factor (20%)
+ Documents Factor (10%)
`
Where Savings Factor = min(100, (Current Savings / 3-Month Target) x 100).
Pantry Score (25% weight)
`
Pantry Score = Supply Days Factor (50%)
+ Nutritional Balance (20%)
+ Expiration Health (20%)
+ FIFO Compliance (10%)
`
Where Supply Days Factor = min(100, (Current Supply Days / Target Days) x 100).
Why Transparency Matters
1. Trust
When you can see every variable and every formula, you know the score is honest. There is no hidden algorithm designed to make you feel anxious and buy things.
2. Actionability
A black-box score of "Medium" gives you no guidance. A transparent breakdown showing "Your Pantry Score is 35 because you have 8 supply days against a 30-day target" tells you exactly what to do next.
3. Motivation
Seeing the math means you can calculate the impact of your next action before you take it. "If I complete these 5 checklist items, my Tasks Score goes from 70 to 82, which raises my overall score by 3 points." That is specific, achievable, and motivating.
4. No Fear Tactics
Fear-based preparedness tools use vague language to create anxiety: "Your family is at risk." Prevna never does this. Instead: "Your water supply covers 2 of the 3 days recommended for your household. Adding 4 more gallons reaches full coverage."
Math instead of fear. Always.
Progressive Disclosure
We also believe in showing the right amount of detail at the right time:
Level 1 — The Number: Your Readiness Score is 62. This is all most people need most of the time.
Level 2 — The Sub-Scores: Tasks 70, Scenarios 55, Documents 80, Financial 45, Pantry 65. Now you know which area needs attention.
Level 3 — The Breakdown: Your Financial Score is 45 because savings are at $2,100 against a $9,450 target (22%), debt ratio is healthy (80/100), insurance coverage is partial (50/100).
Level 4 — The Formula: The exact calculation with all inputs, weights, and intermediate values. Available on every score detail page.
You can stop at any level. The depth is always there when you want it.
The Philosophy Behind the Math
Prevna was built on a simple belief: preparedness is not a personality trait or a political statement. It is a series of practical decisions that can be measured, improved, and tracked.
When you see the numbers, preparedness stops being overwhelming and starts being manageable. "I need to improve my pantry score by 15 points" is a specific, achievable goal. "I need to be more prepared" is not.
Every feature in Prevna connects back to this philosophy. Every score shows its math. Every recommendation shows its reasoning. Every calculation can be verified by you.
Because if the math is right, the preparation takes care of itself.
